Do You Have Just One Favorite?

Do you have a favorite food? Is there a food that you look forward to eating no matter the time of year or time of day? This question was harder to answer for myself then I had initially thought. When I thought about doing a post on a favorite food I got stuck.

What is my favorite food, or do I even have a favorite? I could be all magnamious and say my favorite food is carrots but you guys might not believe me. Or I could tell you my favorite food is brown rice, but I’d be lying.

I’ve been thinking about this all day and realized that I don’t just have one favorite food, but rather some favorite foods from different categories. When I was morbidly obese my favorite food was chocolate. Chocolate is probably not the best favorite food to have!

I didn’t have favorite foods in categories such as:

Vegetables

Grains/Beans

Meats

Fruits

Dairy

I really only liked chocolate, and the more chocolate I ate during the day the less of those other foods I ate. These days I still do like chocolate, but it isn’t a mainstay of my diet. Now, I really do have some favorite foods in the categories above. I realize that I didn’t have to give up chocolate, but instead I added in lots of other yummy foods into my list of favorites.

So here are my favorites in those categories:

Vegetables – Asparagus

Grains/Beans – Black Beans

Meats – Chicken Parmesean (I know it’s a recipe!)

Fruits – Watermelon

Dairy – Greek Yogurt (I hate milk.)

It was hard to just list one food, as there are many foods in all the categories except dairy that I really like.

    Dairy – I like milk :) Big fan of cheese too but I don’t eat it regularly.

    Vegetables: I can’t decide between artichockes and spinach
    Grains/beans: peas
    Meats: I prefer fish to meat, so gilt-head (sea) bream (translated from wikipedia, I don’t know the name in English)
    Fruits: orangine
    Dairy: mató… mmm… with no translate: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mat%C3%B3"mató

    But it’s difficult to make a choice!

    When you wrote that your favorite food is something that you could eat at any time of the the day, that really limits it for me! I can’t stand to think about eating chocolate early in the morning. The only foods I would want to eat at any time of the day are bananas, strawberries, peaches and milk.

    Hmmmm, I would have to say my favorites for those categories are: asparagus, quinoa, bison, pineapple and cheese. I could definitely eat any kind of cheese at any time of the day :-)

    Veggies- Brocolli, Grains- Oatmeal, Fruits-Apples, Dairy-Yougurt.

    Grains/Beans – Raw green beans

    Meats – Salmon

    Fruits – Strawberries, but this was a toughie since I pretty much like them all.

    Dairy – Any type of cheese.

    When I read this the first thing that came to my mind that I cant go without is my muesli, yogurt and fruit in the mornings!! I go to bed looking forward to my breakfast and only 40g of muesli…could have lots more, but am in control.

    Heard on Dr Oz that craving chocolate could mean depression??? did you see that, saw it on twitter this morning. I do love my block of dark chocolate most days…could have more, but know better!!

    Veg – Sweet potato
    Grains/beans – peas
    Meat – chicken
    Fruit – gold kiwi’s
    Dairy – yogurt

    Vegetables-asparagus, chard,Brussels sprouts, broccoli,spinach,kale,romaine lettuce, watercress, dandelion greens, fresh mint
    fruits-pears, blueberries, apples, oranges, strawberries, mangos, pineapples,starfruit
    grains-quinoa, farro and whole wheat couscous and oats in any form
    meat-all are equal
    beverage-coffee or water

    Here are my top picks (I added a couple of food groups that are important to me!):
    Vegetable – spinach
    Grain/bean- chickpeas
    Vegetarian Protein (I don’t eat meat!) – tofu
    Dairy substitute (I don’t do cow’s milk dairy either!) – soymilk
    Fruit – fresh apricots
    Nuts/seeds – almonds and ground flaxseed

    Grains/beans – I love, love, love bread. Darn.
    Dairy – Ice cream, if I am being honest. But I just discovered that I actually find blueberry yogurt (with cereal in it) quite tasty.

  18. Like this post Diane! I have to say that I LOVE LOVE bread! I eat it dry unless post workout & then I add my protein PB. But nowadays I eat healthy varieties of bread. I also love my weekend cookie treat! Love oatmeal raisin & molasses!

    As for the other, broccoli, oatmeal, chicken/turkey, apples, non fat Greek yogurt. I love my protein powders too as I can add them to so many foods!

    Vegetable -asparagus (must be local though)

    Meat – Roast chicken
    Dairy- Goat’s cheese
    Fruit – quince from my garden-unfortunately they aren’t palatable without plenty of sugar so my homegrown raspberries are my second choice.

    Some of my favorites –

    Vegetables: grilled okra (must be fresh from the field)
    Grains/beans: love black beans – rice, of course!
    Meat: grilled mahi mahi (with some ginger – yum!)
    Fruit: mangos, mangos and more mangos!!!
    dairy: I won’t lie – pistachio almond ice cream.

    Now I’m hungry and it’s only 9:00 a.m.!!!

  27. I agree that it is so hard to just pick one thing as my favorite food. I have learned to love so much food on this healthy journey and I’m so happy to share it.

    Not easy to pick ‘a’ favourite… so I’m cheating!
    Vegetables – pretty much all of ‘em (except mooli or radishes – yuck!)
    Grains/Beans – jumbo porridge oats (with lentils as runner up) if I’m being sensible. Bread is a BIG favourite but also my nemesis!
    Proteins – a medium-rare steak (grrrrreat! says the carnivorous part of me) or a really decent free-range egg
    Fruits – no contest – Pink Lady apples (closely followed by physallis and blueberries)
    Dairy – Greek (or Turkish) yoghurt (but I love cheeses too)

    Hard to pick a favorite, but here it goes!

    Vegetables – Cabbage (I love it in salads and cooked so many ways), but really there is not a vegetable I don’t like.

    Grains/Beans – I’d say black beans as well.

    Meats – A good tenderloin steak

    Fruits – Strawberries

    Dairy – Goat cheese or Dubliner cheese. I love cheese!

    Favourite? Toast. If I allowed myself to I can easily eat this any time of the day. But it does funny things to my blood sugar so I dont.

    Otherwise :
    Veg Baby New potatoes
    Grain/Beans Muesli (does that count?)
    Meats Roast Lamb
    Fruits A ripe peach!
    Dairy Has to be cheese – goats cheese,cheddar, you name it!

    Veggie – broccoli
    Grains/Beans – brown rice

    Dairy – yogurt (haven’t tried the Greek, yet)

  37. I consider myself to be a food connoisseur. This is probably not something to be when you have a food addiction like I do. But in all honesty, I am a fabulous cook… so I think the *foodie* within serves well when it comes to healthy cooking! :)

    Here are my faves (I definitely had to think!):

    Vegetables: Broccoli, Green beans, & Corn

    Grains/Beans: All types of rice (especially jasmine and brown rice), multi-grain bread, black beans

    Meats: Chicken breast & pork chops

    Fruits: Grapes, strawberries & bananas

    Dairy: String cheese, cheddar cheese, low-cal pudding, 1/2% milk and chocolate soy milk (yum!), and eggs.

    Great post!! It really made me think about what my favorite things to eat are! It’s great to find out that I really do have healthy tastes after all! (sometimes eating healthy food like veggies feels a little forced. Does that make sense?) :)

    Another great post Diane, and it’s interesting to see others’favorites – I wouldn’t have guessed that asparagus and brocolli would be so popular! Anyway my favorites are carrots (roasted, with olive oil, sea salt and freshly ground pepper), followed by swiss chard chopped and roasted in the same manner. Favorite grain is polenta (homemade with parm cheese), runner up is black rice. Meat depends on the recipe – I like it spicy! Butterflied leg of lamb, marinated in a curry mixture and then grilled is a favorite, as is grilled salmon. Fruit – fresh peaches in season – I seriously can’t get enough of them! Dairy favorite is soft goat cheese.

    Grains/Beans – Fresh cooked pinto beans, cooked with onion, garlic and some salt.

    Meats – Victoria’s Fillet from Outback.

    Fruits – I think I’m going with strawberries, fresh, on this one.

    Dairy – Lately…smoked cheddar cheese. Yum!
