I Went on Vacation, and Didn’t Even Weigh

I was on vacation last week, hence the lack of Friday or Monday post. I had Monday and Wednesday scheduled, but kinda forgot about Friday in my haste to pack two cars for the nine of us.

We loaded everything up and headed out. Here was the view from the beach house in Alabama. Nice!

One thing I didn’t pack was a *gasp* bathroom scale! As most of you know, I am a regular, daily weigh-in type person, and I briefly thought about bringing a scale, but decided I could get along without it for a week.

So, instead of weighing, we rode on a ferry across Mobile Bay:

We sat on the beach, I took pictures of the kids:

Walked back and forth from the beach to the house about five gazillion times.

Went to the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL. A must-see if you are nearby. It’s free!

When I got home, I stood on the scale and found my weight was within my happy range. I was up .5 pounds from my weight before we left – which is well within the 3 to 5 lb. range I float within.

The key thing for me is this. I didn’t go crazy with the food on vacation. I ate like I normally do, walked on the beach each morning and had the occasional dessert. And all was good. The tendency to gain weight on vacation often results in treating your relaxing vacation as a complete vacation from healthy eating and exercise. That’s when we can all get into trouble!

Hope you all had a great holiday and were able to stay on your weight loss/maintenance plan! Do you weigh on vacation or forget about it?!  Diane

We spent a day at the Wright Patt Air Force Base Aviation Museum in Dayton Ohio over the weekend. Like minds. Very interesting exhibits and free also.

You are so right – it is the habits which hold us.

  5. LOVE THE PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!! How fun! Like you Diane, I just go about my regular eating on vacation & try to keep moving! I don’t let all fly to the wind like some & that works better for me cause my tummy gets too upset if I do that…

Thank you for sharing the photos and memories and for not putting your program of eating on vacation. It is inspiring every time someone shares that they did what they needed to do – without obsession – and came back within their healthy range.

That picture of your kids is great — I love looking at kids faces and tracing how much of their parents is in each one. :-)

    You are a great photographer!

Before the weekend we had just gotten out of the hospital for a pretty routine test. THAT was the worst part of the weekend. Otherwise, it was just a matter of portion control.

    Very inspiring.

Great!! I was in the area over the holiday too! How about those storms!! The gulf coast is a wonderful place to visit! I missed the aviation museum because I didn’t stop in Pensacola, not too jealous :-)

I never weigh myself on vacation. I don’t really see the point. My vacations are very active with hiking/running/swimming/biking etc. I always go home from vacation about the same as I started. And if I’m up a pound? Oh well!

Love the photo of the kids – great job!

We went on vacation in April and I came back weighing less! I did watch what I ate, but there was some rich food thrown in for good measure. It did not agree with me, so by the end of the vacation I was having stomach cramps. :( I didn’t eat at all the day we flew home until 5:30 that night. Airplanes + stomach cramps = Bad things. ;)

Right now I am working on losing a few pounds I put on in the last month. Those summer BBQ’s are coming up, too. Temptations abound!

  13. Glad you had such a nice vacation! I love all the photos!

I don’t weigh myself very often, so I don’t on vacation. But I do make an effort to not get too much in a “vacation mood.” Like you, I eat what I normally eat, move a lot, and have a few treats that are worth it.

Great that you left the scale at home. That must have been an awesome feeling as you should be proud of that :)
I leave my scale at home – too bulky and these days I don’t think I will pack it too as I have my eating under control :)

    What fun!

I laughed because a friend suggested to me that I take my scale on vacation and during our move and I had never thought to do that. I decided against it and that I would do my best to listen to my body and not gain.

    Thanks for sharing your trip.
