We’ve Been Growing Things

Last year, we finally had success at gardening, and this year tiny little tomatoes are popping out, which makes me and my fourth son very happy!

He was so excited to find the first tiny tomato yesterday morning. After he found this one, he found about eight more, just waiting to get bigger and turn red.

After we did some weeding of the garden, the three middle boys sat on my Mother’s Day present – a pretty yard swing that the whole family has enjoyed!

Here’s most of the garden laid out. We have to put a fence up around it, or the bunnies will have a feast night after night! We planted tomatoes (23 of them!), green and banana peppers, zucchini, watermelon, beans, butternut squash and cucumbers. Although I didn’t can anything last year, I may try this year.

I hope that you don’t mind me sharing non-weight loss related things!

Have you ever gardened and had success?  Diane

I think planting a garden and learning to do these types of things with your kids is very maintenance related.

I always write “if you think this is not weight loss/maintenance related, look again” when I write these types of posts.

In my opinion, this is a part of the life style that makes it happen.

Good for you on the bunny fence and the weed tarp!

I don’t mind that you share non-weight loss things as well. These just shows that your family is healthy too buy eating fresh produce that you all planted yourselves.

I am such a strange person- few things in the world are more exciting to my eyes than a garden growing or a baby . What beauties you have in both ! Those yard swings are wonderful for happy chats and daydreams

  5. I’ve never gardened with success. I was really tempted to start a square foot garden on my patio (live in a townhouse – no yard) this year. I finally realized that I didn’t want to spend the time and money on it this year. Plus I know nothing about gardening.

I have a black thumb. I’m the Dr. Mengele of plants.

At the old for-profit I used to work for, vendors would send things for the winter holidays like boxes of cookies, wine, and … Poinsettias.

I SWEAR to you, these things would shiver when the mail carrier brought them over to my desk. I could imagine them thinking, “No, no! Not her desk! We tell scary stories about her to frighten our children!”

I would always give them to my garden-happy neighbor in the next apt over, with the pots on little stands outside her door. She always took good care of them. With me, if it doesn’t meow and wind itself around my ankles, I forget to feed it.

  8. Gardening with your kids is so much fun! We only have two tomato plants, but the toddler is very excited, especially since one of them is getting red.

Happy weekend, and enjoy your garden! :)

I grow basil, dill, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sweet peas, green beans, Brussels sprouts, and hopefully this year: Peppers. We have sandy soil and live where it is very hot so we have to container garden but we get two growing seasons. :-)

The veggies are great in helping me add more veggies to my diet. Even when I am all vegged out I will still eat home grown.

I am hoping to plant a key lime tree this year.

Beautiful! And no I don’t mind hearing about “non weight loss things” but I have to say I agree with Vickie above – at the end of the day, it is all part of the kind of lifestyle that supports weight loss, isn’t it?
Anyway, glad to see you and the kids are enjoying your garden!

I love it!! Your garden is such a healthy inspiration! I hope to do one or at least some potted gardening one day. I love it that your children are involved and liking the gardening too….you are teaching them such wonderful life/healthy skills. I think every part of our lives are “weight loss related” because it all comes together to help us be who we are on our maintenance or losing weight journeys. I think sharing the non-specific weight loss things shows how everything works together in the entire process. Love it….very inspiring!

    Diane,

I love your sharing your life with us. Life is more than food, nutrition, weight loss… when we are slimmer and healthier, we have the energy to go LIVE life.

So please DO share things like this–it helps everyone, I’m sure, to see what you have the energy to do as a fit person. What is also interesting is that you look SO much YOUNGER now than some of the pictures from 15 years ago you share. The heaviness looked so exhausting.

You are such an inspiration. God bless you!
